ABOUT L'ENFANT PLAZAL'Enfant Plaza is a metro station located in Southwest Washington, D.C. Operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the station has been open since 1977. From L'Enfant Plaza, commuters can transfer to the Blue and Orange lines on the lower level, and to the Green and Yellow lines on the upper level. Looking at a map of the DC Metro, travelers will see that L'Enfant Plaza is where the Yellow and Green lines intersect heading north. Future plans are in the works for the Metro's Silver line to stop at L'Enfant Plaza also. Once this happens, L'Enfant Plaza will be the only station in the entire DC Metro system to be served by five different lines.
Travelers can enter the station at 7th St. and Maryland Avenue, on D St. between 6th and 7th St., or through the L'Enfant Plaza shopping mall at D St. and 9th St. Named after Pierre Charles L'Enfant, the city planner behind Washington, D.C., the station is convenient to a number of attractions, including the National Mall and several of the Smithsonian Museums. From L'Enfant Plaza, travelers also have the ability to connect to the Virginia Railway Express at nearby L'Enfant Station, which provides rail service for commuters headed to Fredericksburg, Maryland and the Manassas Regional Airport.
Riders new to the Washington, D.C. Metro should keep in mind that each rider needs his or her own Metro card or fare pass in order to ride the Metro. Cards and passes are easily obtained at user-friendly machines located in all Metro stations. Out of town visitors can purchase One-Day or 7-Day Metro Passes, which offer an unlimited amount of travel during that period of time. Commuters with multiple leg trips can buy a SmarTrip card, which is accepted by a number of regional transit agencies, including the Metro, Metrobus, DC Circulator, and a variety of Virginia and Maryland rail lines.
The Metro system can be busy and confusing. In order to make the experience go as smoothly as possible, first time users should consider picking up a free "metro pocket guide" which includes maps and other information for riders. These guides are available from the station master at when entering a Metro station and can help travelers plot out the best line and stop to take in order to reach their destination. |
